Mondays in the Sun

Fernando Leon de Aranoa directs the slice of life drama Los lunes al sol (Mondays in the Sun). In a working-class neighborhood of Northern Spain, a local shipyard closes after a series of strikes and layoffs. As a result, a group of dock workers are left out of a job. Too proud to look for work, Santa (Javier Bardem) occupies himself by drinking, philosophizing, and picking up women. Jose (Luis Tosar) lets his unemployment affect his marriage to Ana (Nieve De Medina), who works in a factory. Also out of work is middle-aged Lino (Jose Angel Egido), who desperately searches for a job, and aging Amador (Celso Bugallo), who has given up hope in favor of alcohol. Those who do work are Rico (Joaquin Climent), who owns the bar where everyone spends their time, and Reina (Enrique Villen), who accepts a security guard position at a sports arena., Fine performances distinguish this subtle drama about a group of unemployed dockworkers who spend their days searching for work, lamenting their lost dreams and drowning their sorrows at the local watering hole.
