Both Monk and Eels are working on robbery-murder at a jewelry store, and Monk is none too pleased that his rival is continually two steps ahead of him in uncovering evidence and arriving at the right conclusions–in fact, Eels’ skills are something short of miraculous! Eventually, Monk discovers that Eels has been cheating all along with the help of his mother (!)…and it is a suddenly humbled and contrite Marty Eels who begs Monk’s help when his duplicity puts his mom in harm’s way., Monk has stiff competition solving the case of a murdered jewellery-store owner from a second-rate PI with a loser reputation – who suddenly displays skills even more amazing than Monk’s., Adrian Monk is a highly gifted detective whose career is jeopardised by his overwhelming fear of germs, crowds, small places, and almost everything else…(although he’s making progress on milk). Monk’s disorder was triggered by the murder of his beloved wife, Trudy, which continues to haunt him as the only unsolved mystery in his career. Ordered to take a leave of absence from the police department, Monk hires Sharona, a nurse who helps him try to get reinstated on the force, and in the process, becomes an unlikely Dr. Watson to his Sherlock Holmes. When the police department find themselves unable to crack a high-profile case, they have no choice but to bring back the only man for the job…phobias and all., Small-time private detective Marty Eels suddenly becomes a local celebrity by making a series of dazzling deductions to solve a crime, leaving Monk feeling dejected at being upstaged – until he realises his new rival is a fraud.
