Nayak is the second in Channel 4’s quartet of films celebrating the collaboration between actress Sharmila Tagore and director Satyajit Ray. Reflecting on their working relationship, Tagore recalls: “With Ray there was never any long discussion. For Nayak he said, ‘You might look a little young so I want to give you glasses.’ I asked, ‘Am I long or short-sighted?’ He was extremely amused. ‘So you’ve started thinking about your roles!’ But I think he gave me glasses because in the last scene, when I take them off, Uttam Kumar’s character notices my eyes for the first time.” In Nayak, Tagore plays women’s magazine editor Aditi, who finds herself on a train journey with famous actor Arindham Mukherjee. As the journey progresses, Arindham unwittingly reveals to Aditi some dark secrets from his past. He may be a huge star but off-screen his relationships with friends and loved ones lack depth and intimacy. Ray’s original screenplay bears his trademark skill in capturing nuances of character and relationships through the main narrative but also in many unfolding sub-plots. At the centre of the drama lies Sharmila Tagore’s still and watchful presence as Aditi., Ram Charan, a happy go lucky guy falls for Madhu (Kajal Agarwal) at the first sight. However, what happens when a line of murders are committed?, Aditi is a pretty journalist who interviews the film star Arindam Mukherjee on a train trip to Delhi. After she has completed the interview, Aditi tears up her notes and refuses to use the story that could change the public perception of the popular actor., A happy go lucky guy falls for Madhu at the first sight but after a series of murders a commited, will Madhu be able to stick with him?
