Filmmaker Fadi Hindash examines how the Arab world is changing, both for better and for worse, in this documentary. In Not Quite The Taliban, Hindash looks at how contemporary Western culture is making its presence felt among young Arabs in the Middle East, but while the trappings of American and European lifestyles are common, the open-minded attitude of the West has not made itself known. Hindash is gay, and Not Quite The Taliban explores the absence of compassion among Arab youth for their gay peers; as much as they strive to look hip and throw off the staid stereotypes of their elders, in Hindash’s home town of Dubai, the lack of tolerance for different lifestyles reflects a bigotry that’s often worse than that of their parents and reveals a troubling double standard. Not Quite The Taliban was an official selection at the 2009 San Jose Arab Film Festival.
