A compelling masterpiece from director Stanley Kubrick. When three French soldiers are to be executed after a failed attack on Ant Hill during Wwi, their Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas) comes to their defence. Unless he can prove the generals ordered the attack, nothing less than a miracle can save them., Stanley Kubrick directed this gripping antiwar tract about a battlefield officer-lawyer defending three French soldiers unjustly accused of cowardice during World War I. Based on actual events., This powerful, fact-based absurdity-of-war film stars Kirk Douglas as a commanding officer who defends three scapegoats on trial for a failed offensive that occurred within the French Army in 1916, Bitterly ironic tale of farce and ill fortune in WWI. Dax is the French commander forced to lead his troops into slaughter. When the soldiers mutiny, the French high command try to make an example of them. Emotive, anti-war drama., Adapting Humphrey Cobb’s novel to the screen, director Stanley Kubrick and his collaborators Calder Willingham and Jim Thompson set out to make a devastating anti-war statement, and they succeeded above and beyond the call of duty. In the third year of World War I, the erudite but morally bankrupt French general Broulard (Adolphe Menjou) orders his troops to seize the heavily fortified “Ant Hill” from the Germans. General Mireau (George MacReady) knows that this action will be suicidal, but he will sacrfice his men to enhance his own reputation. Against his better judgment, Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas) leads the charge, and the results are appalling. When, after witnessing the slaughter of their comrades, a handful of the French troops refuse to leave the trenches, Mireau very nearly orders the artillery to fire on his own men. Still smarting from the defeat, Mireau cannot admit to himself that the attack was a bad idea from the outset: he convinces himself that loss of Ant Hill was due to the cowardice of his men. Mireau demands that three soldiers be selected by lot to be executed as an example to rest of the troops. Acting as defense attorney, Colonel Dax pleads eloquently for the lives of the unfortunate three, but their fate is a done deal. Even an eleventh-hour piece of evidence proving Mireau’s incompetence is ignored by the smirking Broulard, who is only interested in putting on a show of bravado. A failure when first released (it was banned outright in France for several years), Paths of Glory has since taken its place in the pantheon of classic war movies, its message growing only more pertinent and potent with each passing year (it was especially popular during the Vietnam era)., An ambitious, French WWI general agrees to send his troops on a suicide mission in hopes of getting a promotion, but his colonel sees the futility of the attack, and some soldiers refuse to enter the fray. Based on actual events., Acclaimed anti-war drama about three valiant French soldiers who face the death penalty after being court-martialled during World War I. Ordered to attack an impregnable German position, inevitably the soldiers fall back after only a few yards. A general, who sees every skirmish in terms of his own prestige, court-martials three of them for cowardice, and although defended by their commander, they now fear for their lives., (1957) 88 mins PG. Stanley Kubrick’s first major studio film is set during the First World War, drawing on the dramatic difference between the experiences of the men in the trenches and their commanding officers, who are comfortably billeted in their châteaux. After a failed attack by the French troops, led by Col Dax (Kirk Douglas), three men are selected to be shot for cowardice pour encourager les autres . An outraged Dax defends them at the court martial, but will the possession of evidence which should condemn a superior officer be enough to save the three from execution? Such was the dramatic strength of the film it was banned in France until 1975. A savage attack on the role of the French military during World War I, it was banned in the country for 18 years. Kubrick pulled out of Kirk Douglas the performance of his life as the WWI French army officer defending three of his soldiers who face the death penalty for refusing to go ‘over the top’ to certain death.
