Ross McElwee’s film began as a study of the 1864 Civil War campaign, but ended up as a search for “a nice Southern girl” after he was dumped by his girl friend., Filmmaker Ross McElwee plans to make a documentary about General Sherman’s devastating March to the Sea, but he keeps getting distracted by various flowers of Southern womanhood. His camera never seems to leave his shoulder, much to the frustration of the people around him. What might potentially have been a somewhat dry account of a pivotal moment in the Civil War becomes a very personal, confessional, and funny exploration of Ross and the women that move him. McElwee’s narration shows a genuine understanding of the absurd situations and motivations he is presenting, and the results almost feel like the work of a Southern Woody Allen. The viewer will get to know and like Ross and will probably wonder what happens to him after the film ends. Fortunately, the McElwee saga continues in Time Indefinite and Six O’Clock News.
