For over 40 years, members of the Joseph family have gathered at Big Mama Joe’s house to feast on soul food and familial love. Every Sunday, there was a mouth-watering array of fried chicken, catfish, cornbread, collards, potato salad, mac and cheese, biscuits, gravy, sweet potatoes and pie all lovingly prepared by Mama Joe (Irma P. Hall) and her three daughters, Teri, Maxine and Bird. These sisters could not be more different. Teri (Vanessa L. Williams) is an ambitious lawyer married to attorney/aspiring recording artist Miles (Michael Beach). As the wealthy ones in the otherwise middle-class clan, they are constantly helping out other family members, something that Teri resents, but always does. Bird (Nia Long) is the baby sister who at the beginning of the film marries Lem Davis (Mekhi Phifer), an ex-con struggling to stay straight. Bird has just opened a beauty shop thanks to a loan from Teri. Maxine (Viveca A. Fox) is a pregnant housewife happily married to hard-working Kenny (Jeffrey D. Sams). Their two children are cute little Kelly and 10-year-old Ahmad (Brandon Hammond), the story’s narrator. He and Mama Joe share a special bond and he knows that she is the glue that keeps the family together. When Mama Joe falls ill, the glue weakens, old wounds between the sisters open, and familial chaos ensues, leaving only Ahmad to somehow obey his grandmother’s wishes and reunite the family. Based on incidents from the life of screenwriter/director George Tillman, Soul Food is an upbeat comedy-drama, that while a little long, uneven in the middle and somewhat contrived in its attempts to manipulate the heartstrings, presents an African American family in a positive light. Its message could apply to any family: unity is strength., Matriarch Mama Joe has held her family together for 40 years around a Sunday dinner of soul food. When diabetes hospitalises her, the dinners stop and tensions among her three daughters start to break the family apart. Two of the sisters feud continuously: Teri is jealous of Maxine’s marriage and irritated that everyone assumes her corporate salary is open to the rest of the family’s uses., Matriarch Mama Joe has held her family together for 40 years around a Sunday dinner of soul food. Maxine resents Teri’s bossiness and insensitivity to family tradition. Bird, the youngest, newly married to an ex-con, accepts a favour from an old lover that leads to her husband’s arrest. Mamma Joe, the matriarch of an extended African American family, lays on famous Sunday ‘soul food’ feasts at which the family come together and resolve their differences. However, when Mamma Joe falls ill the family begins to fracture, leaving one young man, Ahmad – through whose eyes the story is told – trying to keep the relatives from descending into all-out war., This hit domestic comedy-drama is based on George Tillman Jr’s own family, is about the fortunes of an extended African-American family recalled through the eyes of young narrator Ahmad (Brandon Hammond). Ahmad’s world revolves around his grandmother, Big Mama Joseph (Irma P. Teri has lost patience for her husband Miles (Michael Beach), who wants to quit the law and take up music. Bird doesn’t realise that her husband Lem (Mekhi Phifer) is about to be humiliated by her ex-boyfriend (Mel Jackson). And while Maxine’s relationship with her husband Kenny (Jeffrey D. Sams) is going well, her relationship with her jealous sister Teri needs fixing. These conflicts boil over at Big Mama’s traditional Sunday dinners, where the matriarch plays peacemaker. The ritual faces extinction, however, when Big Mama suffers a stroke – but Ahmad is waiting in the wings to take her place., Saga of three sisters who must sort out their differences when their beloved mother becomes ill. The story is seen through the eyes of Ahmad, the young son of one of the sisters., A close Chicago clan begins to fall apart when the matriarch, Mama Joe, becomes ill.
