To drum up business at his service station, Goober holds a contest. Unfortunately, he makes a typographical error while writing up his announcements, and as a result he posts a grand prize of $200 rather than $20. The winner, Floyd the barber, demands immediately payment-then sues for fraud when Goober pleads poverty. The devastating stroke which had recently befallen actor Howard McNear (Floyd) is painfully evident in this episode, though McNear courageously withstands the rigors of Ron Friedman and Pat McCormick’s teleplay. “Goober’s Contest” originally aired April 10, 1967, as the final episode of The Andy Griffith Show’s seventh season., Rob Reiner guest stars in this episode, in which Goober holds a contest at the gas station and mistakenly prints a winning coupon for $200. Floyd receives the errant ticket—and demands payment. This episode ended the series’ seventh season and it was the last in which Floyd appeared. Less than four years later, Reiner went on to star on “All in the Family.” Goober: George Lindsey. Floyd: Howard McNear.
