Evidently having learned nothing from his humanity-affirming experience in “The Christmas Story”, Ben Weaver (Will Wright), Mayberry’s resident scrooge, demands that Sheriff Andy foreclose upon the impoverished Scobey family. Problem is, Andy is a personal friend of Lester Scobey (Sam Edwards) and Lester’s wife (Margaret Kerry). Using Weaver’s own strategy, Andy searches high and low for a legal loophole that will allow the Scobeys to stay. Hope Summers, who later played the recurring role of Clara Edwards, is here seen as Ethel. Written by Ben Gershman and Leo Solomon, “Andy Forecloses” first aired April 24, 1961., Andy is pressured by heartless Ben Weaver to serve a foreclosure notice to a struggling family living in one of Weaver’s houses.
