Eventually, of course, the truth comes out. Directed by costar Ida Lupino, The Bigamist manages to evoke a certain amount of sympathy for Edmond O’Brien, without in any way advocating or excusing his lifestyle. It’s worth noting that an Italian film made around the same time, also titled The Bigamist, is a comedy., A married travelling salesman picks up a lonely cook who works in a greasy-spoon restaurant while visiting LA, and gets her pregnant. Hearing of the pregnancy, he marries her as well. But when the first wife and he try to adopt a child, the second marriage comes to light, and a vicious court battle ensues., The dilemma of a traveling salesman (Edmond O’Brien) with a wife in San Francisco—and another in Los Angeles.
