Although the stricken man strives to be accepted, his physical abnormalities make it difficult., Moving drama based on the life of John Merrick, a man born in Victorian England with a disfiguring disease and apparently doomed to a grim existence as a sideshow freak until he is taken in and cared for by a London surgeon. He is rescued from ridicule by Dr Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins), a doctor at the London Hospital. Given lodgings and a settled life, his inner soul blossoms and he becomes a courted member of society while still realising he will never be truly accepted. The two lead performances are stunning and the film, shot in black and white by Oscar winner Freddie Francis, is beautifully moving., John Hurt gives a first rate performance in this critically acclaimed film based on the true story of a surgeon and his attempts to restore the looks of a facially disfigured man., John Hurt stars as John Merrick, the hideously deformed 19th century Londoner known as “The Elephant Man”. Treated as a sideshow freak, Merrick is assumed to be retarded as well as misshapen because of his inability to speak coherently. In fact, he is highly intelligent and sensitive, a fact made public when one Dr. Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins) rescues Merrick from a carnival and brings him to a hospital for analysis. Alas, even after being recognized as a man of advanced intellect, Merrick is still treated like a freak; no matter his station in life, he will forever be a prisoner of his own malformed body. Unable to secure rights for the famous stage play The Elephant Man, producer Mel Brooks based his film on the memoirs of Frederick Treves and a much later account of Merrick’s life by Ashley Montagu. The film is lensed in black and white by British master cinematographer Freddie Francis. Though nominated for eight Academy Awards, the film was ultimately shut out in every category., Moving drama based on the life of John Merrick, a man born with a disfiguring disease who seemed doomed to a grim existence as a sideshow freak until taken in by a London surgeon and introduced to society.
