In the early 1950s Howard Prince, who works in a restaurant, helps out a black-listed writer friend by selling a TV station a script under his own name. The money is useful in paying off gambling debts, so he takes on three more such clients. Howard is politically pretty innocent, but involvement with Florence – who quits TV in disgust over things – and friendship with the show’s ex-star – now himself blacklisted – make him start to think about what is really going on., Woody Allen plays a bookmaker who sees an opportunity to make a quick buck during the McCarthyite era and turns into an unlikely hero. For a small fee he puts his name on blacklisted writers’ works. Our naive hero soon gets himself into very hot water. The film satirises the persecution of artists by the government, with some very strong performances by the cast., Howard, a cashier and small-time bookie, poses as a writer to sell scripts for blacklisted screenwriters during the McCarthy era. When threatened with allegations, Howard takes a stand., An incisive comedy set at the time of the infamous McCarthy witch-hunt and centring on a bookmaker who rents his name to blacklisted writers. The script was penned by Walter Bernstein, himself blacklisted, and several of the actors in the film were subjected to blacklisting in real life., Martin Ritt’s The Front is a black-comedy about the McCarthy hearings of the ’50s and the subsequent Hollywood blacklisting. Woody Allen plays a bookmaker who become “a front” for a group of blacklisted Hollywood screenwriters who aren’t able to get a job, because of their alleged communist ties. The Front was written by blacklisted Walter Bernstein and features performances from several blacklisted entertainers, including Herschel Bernardi, Joshua Shelley, Lloyd Gough, and Zero Mostel.
