As many as 250,000 Roma Gypsies now live in the UK, where marriage under the age of 16 is illegal – but for some fiercely traditional Roma families, the custom of arranging unlawful marriages for children is still very much alive. This film follows two families living in Britain who have recently immigrated from Hungary and Romania but have not adjusted their behaviour to fit with the laws of this country. This is an insider view of a community living at odds with the system, according to a traditional Gypsy code known as ‘Pachiv’: a culture where the head of the family must always be obeyed, and where childhood ends in the early teens. The film documents the challenge for English authorities when they try to intervene as traditional Roma practices clash with contemporary UK laws. In Oldham, Gypsy patriarch Sanko searches for a young bride for his 14-year-old son Adrian. Sanko and Adrian travel among a network of Gypsy families, from Bradford to Bolton and ultimately to Hungary, in search of a girl to marry. There are complex family arrangements, heated arguments and formal marriage proposals, including negotiations in which the potential bride is just 13 years old. In Rotherham, Huko is responsible for a large clan, including a pregnant 14-year-old girl living in an unlawful marriage with Huko’s nephew. It’s not long before the police and social services come knocking at the door with child protection concerns., Filmed over three months, with extraordinary access to two traditional Roma Gypsy families living across the UK, this documentary offers a never-before-seen insider view on a community living according to ancient customs.
