Talk Show
An argument with Jeannie causes Larry to lose his concentration during a show. Guests include Billy Crystal and Catherine O’Hara., Jeannie (Megan Gallagher) is at the studio while Larry (Garry Shandling) tapes his show, and they’re arguing. Jeannie feels like Larry lets his career completely overshadow his home life. “The only way I’m gonna talk to you is if I’m booked on the show as a guest,” she complains. Just before he goes out to do the monologue, she tells him, “I can’t do this anymore.” Larry does a hurried monologue, and then, during the break, tells Artie (Rip Torn) what she said. Artie helpfully offers to book Dr. Ruth as a guest. Jeannie tells Larry she’s thinking about going to Chicago to stay with her folks for a while. Larry asks her to wait while he tapes another segment so they can talk about it some more. “They get you for eight minutes, and I get you for 90 seconds,” Jeannie complains, “That’s the problem in a nutshell.” As the show goes to commercial, Larry notes to guest Catherine O’Hara, “This show is a torturous, miserable hell.” Meanwhile, Beverly (Penny Johnson), Paula (Janeane Garofalo), and Darlene (Linda Doucett) give Jeannie unwanted advice about how to deal with Larry. Artie tells her that because Larry’s a performer, Jeannie should think of him as a “small helpless child.” “No, Artie,” Jeannie says, “I have sex with him.” To which Artie can only respond, “I’m so sorry, sweetie.” After Billy Crystal’s appearance on the show goes badly, Beverly takes charge., Billy Crystal’s appearance in the guest spot will bring big ratings, but Larry is distracted – his wife is prowling backstage and complaining that she can never talk to him.
