Based on a popular drawing-room drama by Frederick Lonsdale, The Last of Mrs. Cheyney stars Joan Crawford as a jewel thief who poses as an aristocrat. It is Crawford’s intention to pilfer a valuable pearl necklace while attending a society party in the company of partner-in-crime William Powell. Here she attracts the attention of Robert Montgomery, a young nobleman who is amused by Crawford’s wittiness in the face of the haughty bitchery of Benita Hume. When Montgomery turns out to be a bounder and Powell and Crawford are revealed to be criminals, Crawford does some quick thinking that not only gets her off the hook but puts the two-faced Montgomery in his place as well. Previously filmed in 1929 with Norma Shearer in the lead, The Last of Mrs. Cheyney would itself be remade in 1951 as The Law and the Lady, with Greer Garson as the heroine., Glossy interpretation of Frederick Lonsdale’s story about Fay Cheyney, a classy American jewel thief in London. Along the way she also steals more than one aristocratic British heart. There is a big charity function at the house of Mrs. Cheyney and a lot of society is present. With her rich husband, deceased, rich old Lord Kelton and playboy Lord Arthur Dilling are both very interested in the mysterious Fay. Invited to the house of the Duchess, Fay is again the center of attention for Arthur and Kelton with her leaning towards stuffy old Kelton. When Arthur sees Charles, Fay’s Butler, lurking in the gardens, he remembers that Charles was a thief caught in Monte Carlo and he figures that Fay may be more interested in the pearls of the Duchess, which she is. After Fay takes the pearls, but before she can toss them out the window, she is caught by Arthur who is very disappointed in how things are turning out., A pair of debonair jewel thieves prey on British aristocrats while attending a high-society party.
