Inspired by the best-selling Nintendo video game of the same name, the animated The Legend of Zelda first aired September 8, 1989 as a weekly, half-hour segment of another Nintendo cartoon property, the daily syndicated series Super Mario Brothers Super Show. The daughter of King Harkinian, diminutive 15-year-old Princess Zelda fought side by side with an adventurer the same age named Link, to thwart the sinister schemes of the evil Ganon and his Moblin minions. The “Hero of Hyrule”, Link and his sidekick Spryte were the guadians of the powerful Triforce of Wisdom, which of course was dearly coveted by Ganon. The series’ 13 episodes found Ganon indulging in all manner of dark magic to achieve his goal, but Zelda and her comrades generally managed to keep one step ahead of him (just like in the original video game–if you knew how to play it right!). Though it was not seen as a separate, stand-alone entity on either The Super Mario Brothers Super Show nor NBC’s Captain N and the Super Mario Brothers, The Legend of Zelda was occasionally run minus its “Mario” surroundings on cable TV., Animated adventures of Princess Zelda and Link as they defend the kingdom of Hyrule. Based on the video game of the same name.
