An in-depth study of the influence of ideology on human belief systems., Salt-and-pepper bearded Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek and British film-maker Sophie Fiennes follow up their entertaining 2006 dissection of what cinema is really about with this compelling exploration of the ideologies which underpin the modern-day world. Žižek’s contention is that even the apparently most straightforward aspects of our daily lives are structured and determined by ideology. As with his previous work, the philosopher illustrates his thesis via scenes from a wide variety of films, ranging from Taxi Driver, The Last Temptation of Christ and The Dark Knight to Westside Story, The Sound of Music and Jaws. He uses key moments within these movies to highlight the pervasiveness of capitalism, religion, propaganda, our need for underdogs and many more of society’s building blocks to show that we’re not as free as we think we are., Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek and British film-maker Sophie Fiennes follow up their entertaining 2006 dissection of what cinema is really about with this compelling exploration of the ideologies that underpin the modern world. And while this is indeed weighty stuff, Žižek’s idiosyncratic delivery, by turns intense and playful (he presents his arguments from replicas of sets from the films he co-opts, often dressed as a character from the film in question, including a nun from The Sound of Music), ensures it’s a ride that’s as enjoyable as it is thoughtful. A Film4 production.
