Tom Rakewell leaves his sweetheart Anne Truelove for London after inheriting a fortune. His manservant Shadow introduces him to the pleasures available in London. Tiring of his life of pleasure, he resolves to woo a bearded lady, banishing desire from his life. Anne learns of his marriage just as Tom is ruined by a financial scheme. Just as Anne re-enters, Shadow reveals that he is the devil, and claims Tom’s soul as his wages. Tom wins his soul at cards, but loses his sanity, and Anne.
