The Age of Revolution
Michael investigates three cataclysmic revolutions which shaped modern-day China. Beginning in Canton, Michael heads into wild mountain villages in the south, where the 19th-century Taiping Rebellion began. Next, Michael looks at the Boxer Rebellion, an attack against foreigners whose influence had grown as imperial China weakened, which was then crushed by those same foreigners., The finale recalls the three revolutions that gave birth to today’s China. Host Michael Wood visits wild mountain villages; describes the fall of the empire; visits Jazz Age Shanghai; stays in the last communist commune; and celebrates Chinese New Year.
