Jack Smight directed., In this black comedy, a mercenary executioner wanders about the South in 1918 with his portable electric chair. While visiting Alabama, he is assigned to kill a young woman and her brother. He crispifies the brother and then sleeps with the woman to postpone her death, afterward going to the prison doctor to ask him to help fake the girl’s death. The doctor agrees, but only for a high price. The executioner then goes to the bank but is denied a loan. In desperation, he murders a guard and frees the girl himself, later returning for his chair. The girl then takes off, but both are eventually caught; the woman is sentenced to life in prison, and the executioner is executed by his dim-witted assistant.
