Also: computer graphics create life forms of alien worlds., Via a meticulously-selected combination of outer space footage, state-of-the-art CG graphics and informed scientific discussion, the History Channel documentary series The Universe investigates various aspects of the cosmos, with each episode devoted to one particular subtopic. Per its title, the episode entitled “The Outer Planets” travels to the furthest reaches of our galaxy for an examination of such mysterious planets as Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Among many other subtopics, it discusses the chemical composition of Uranus (hydrogen, methane and helium) and its presumed origins (knocked onto its side following a massive collision); the program also travels to Neptune’s cold and empty moon of Triton, which may, according to some scientists, contain water beneath an icy surface. Finally, the episode looks at the uninhabitable and slow-orbiting Pluto – so slow, in its orbit, that it takes approximately 248 years to make a single trip around the solar system.
