January 1944 to June 1944. American and British troops are pinned down at Anzio for months, while at Monte Cassino, the killing goes on and on. African-Americans, incensed at the segregation of the armed forces, put pressure on the military to make some changes. In May, allied soldiers at Cassino and Anzio resume their drive northward in Italy, liberating Rome on 4 June., The November 1943 Army-Marine Corps assault on Tarawa in the Pacific and the reaction to color footage of the battle shown in the U.S. are recalled. Also: The drive north in Italy stalls at Monte Cassino, leading to a risky plan to land Allied forces behind enemy lines at Anzio. Back home, racial violence erupts in Mobile, Ala.; blacks train for combat, but generally are assigned to service posts; a policy reversal permits Japanese-American men, previously labeled “enemy aliens,” to volunteer., In Italy, Allied forces are stalled in the mountains south of Rome, unable to break through the German lines at Monte Cassino. The killing goes on all winter and spring as the enemy manages to fight off repeated Allied attacks. A risky landing at Anzio ends in utter failure; thousands of Allied troops, including Babe Ciarlo of Waterbury, are exposed to enemy fire and unable to advance for months., Documentary series from US filmmakers Lynn Novick and Ken Burns, re-telling the story of World War II.
