The War Of The Roses is a black comedy about love, passion, divorce and furniture. Barbara and Oliver Rose seem to have the perfect marriage. They met at an auction in Nantucket one rainswept afternoon seventeen years ago, bidding against each other for the same ivory figurine, and instantly fell in love. He was a brilliant law student at Harvard, and she, a college girl and star gymnast. They were soon married and had two wonderful children. As Oliver becomes more successful, his recognition of his wife’s separate identity dwindles to the danger point. Although she has everything she could possibly want, Barbara wants more and decides to start a catering company which turns out to be a great success. Not for this couple is there anything resembling a “civilized understanding”: Barbara wants their opulent house, and Oliver isn’t about to part with the domicile. DeVito and screenwriter Michael Leeson never let us forget that the couple’s self-indulgent imbroglio exacts an awful price upon their children (Sean Astin and Heather Fairfield). The War of the Roses was adapted from the novel by Warren Adler., When Washington lawyer Oliver Rose refuses to give his neglected wife Barbara the house as part of their divorce package, the knives come out.
