Tobacco Road

A poor family of farmers struggle to make ends meet during the Great Depression in rural Georgia. The father is proud and stubbornly refuses help as they become in danger of losing their land. Based on the novel by Erskine Caldwell., In this film, Charley Grapewin stars as Jeeter Lester, shiftless patriarch of a large backwoods clan. The Lesters are about to be thrown off their land for nonpayment of rent, but anyone who tries to help them is chased away by the poverty-stricken but intensely-proud Jeeter.
