A full-length personal documentary chronicling the difficulty of gay Hasidic and Orthodox Jews who wrestle with both their sexual and religious identities, Trembling Before G-d was shot over five years in cities around the U.S. by filmmaker Sandi Simcha DuBowski. The film follows several subjects, including Malika and Leah, a longtime Brooklyn lesbian couple who adhere strongly to their religious beliefs, but feel shunned from their community as a result. Then there is Englishman Mark, who is out of the closet but still yearns to be accepted in Orthodox circles. In L.A., David visits an old rabbinical counselor and finds that prejudices still exist, with the rabbi still embracing the “love the sinner, hate the sin” principle. New Yorker Michelle relays fears that she may be the only Hasidic lesbian in her surroundings, and Devorah, an ultra-Orthodox Israeli woman who has children and is married, is unsteady about her repressed longings for same-sex love. The film explores the inner workings of the religion, but as guided by the Torah, many officials will not acknowledge such action, as it is abhorrent and, in some cases, punishable by death. Shot on video, the film was transferred to standard 35 mm for release., Documentary about gay and lesbian Orthodox Jews, who discuss their faith and how it conflicts with their sexual orientation. Directed by Sandi Simcha Dubowski.
