Detective Michael Colefield is about to be best man at his partner Jack’s wedding, but when Jack disappears, Michael has to pick up the pieces. Starring Jack Davenport., Hemophagia has genetically modified almost an entire race of people. A hemophage with superhuman powers has to protect a boy who is thought to be carrying antigens (2006), A cop joins a squad of government and church-sanctioned vampire hunters, who are working to stop the spread of vampirism throughout London and the world., Joe Ahearne’s Ultraviolet series aired in six episodes on Channel Four in Great Britain and did a U.S. stint on the Sci-Fi Channel. An ultramodern, government-sanctioned war against vampires is fought by a group whose members are selected by area of expertise and personal encounters with the highly organized “leech” legions. They rely on good old-fashioned detective work and team spirit, often hard-won in light of conflicting codes of conduct and creed. Human interactivity is heavily supplemented with medical testing, analysis, and biotechnology. Michael Colefield (Jack Davenport), the most recent and reticent addition to the team, is plucked from the police force after his best friend is “taken.” His seasoned partners are the sober Dr. Angela March (Susannah Harker), whose specialty was oncology before joining the force when she had to “neutralize” her husband and daughter, and Vaughn Rice (Idris Elba), a stoic, wry-humored Gulf War veteran who neutralized his entire unit. The team, called a death squad by its opponent, is led by a priest named Pearse Harman (Philip Quast), though no holy water or religious iconography is employed in these battles nor are there long fangs or capes. Although wooden stakes are effective in neutralizing the adversary, the proximity required makes these nostalgic implements dangerous. They employ inventive weapons — like grenades that incapacitate using allicin, the active ingredient of garlic. The leeches are “infected” with the Code V virus, which is transmitted in many cases by conventional nibbling, the signs of which are only visible under ultraviolet light. But Ultraviolet’s story lines more often find the leeches experimenting with other means of infection, drawing in the traditional morality questions raised by the parasitic nature of vampires and presenting a variety of contemporary quandaries and globe-threatening possibilities.
