This fascinating documentary follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he travels from Brooklyn to Rio de Janeiro, where he collaborates with a band of catadores who collect recyclable materials from a garbage dump located on the outskirts of the city., British film-maker Lucy Walker’s Oscar-nominated documentary centres upon Rio de Janeiro’s extremely euphemistically named Jardim Gramacho – which in reality is a vast rubbish dump. She follows Brazilian-born, New York-based artist Vik Muniz as the sculptor-turned-photographer works on a project to document some of the thousands of people who scavenge recyclables – and even their meals – from the massive tip. His aim is not only to photograph the men and women known locally as catadores (pickers) but also to create large collage versions of his prints, using items they have recovered – and then to sell the resultant artworks to fund organisations that help these impoverished workers. Walker’s work doesn’t sidestep the tricky issues of exploitation that such a venture raises, nor does she gloss over the grim realities of the festering site (dead bodies are found from time to time), but despite this the documentary presents an encouraging portrait of how art can be used to make a real change to the lives of people almost literally at the bottom of the heap. In Portuguese with English subtitles., Vik Muniz is an artist who literally creates treasure out of trash; using cast-offs he finds at garbage dumps, Muniz fashions re-creations of famous paintings, and he made an evocative series of images of children who work in sugar plantations using the leftovers from the refining process. So when filmmaker Lucy Walker asked Muniz if she could make a film about him as he worked on his next project, the two settled on what seemed like the perfect location — Jardim Gramacho, a Brazilian landfill not far from Rio de Janeiro that’s said to be the largest refuse dump in the world. Walker’s documentary Waste Land explores Muniz’s creative process as he fashions new works from what others have left behind, but it also profiles the people who live near Jardim Gramacho and make their living by sorting what’s useful from what is not. Walker lends a dignity to these so-called “trash pickers” as they reveal how much of value can be found in other people’s refuse and how they maintain their pride and self-respect despite their sometimes meager circumstances. Waste Land was an official selection at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival., Lucy Walker’s Oscar-nominated documentary centres upon a vast rubbish dump in Rio de Janeiro where artist Vik Muniz is inspired by the site and the people who scavenge recyclables., Renowned artist Vik Muniz travels from Brooklyn to Rio de Janeiro, where he collaborates with a band of catadores who collect recyclable materials from a massive garbage dump located on the outskirts of the city.
