Liverpool is bombed by the Nazis in a World War II raid. A local girl has been strangled and Irish longshoreman Patrick Mathry (Bernard Lee) is accused, convicted and sentenced to death. The innocent prisoner has his judgement commuted from hanging to life in prison. His son Paul (Van Johnson) believes his father died a heroes death in the war only to discover years later his father is alive and rotting away in a British jail. Paul enlists the aid of a reporter named Dunn (Anthony Newlands) to help clear his father’s name. The two encounter reluctance from the police and others who do not want the case reopened and must cut their way through conspiracy and red tape., Van Johnson tries to prove that his convict father did not commit murder 20 years earlier.
