A punch-drunk boxer, Jim “The Wildcat” Eddy (Gordon Clifford), escapes West with his manager (Frank Bond) and black sparring partner (Hooper Phillips). Having obtained training facilities on a ranch, Eddy falls for the rancher’s blond daughter (Charlotte Pierce). The villainous foreman (capitally played by Ervin Renard) uses the ranch as a cover for his smuggling activities and the visitors prove a distinct nuisance. Eddy, who is on to the foreman’s schemes, at first acts the silly Eastern dude but later shows his dexterity outside the ring as well as in. Produced by an obscure outfit calling itself Bear Productions, The Wildcat is in all likelihood the only surviving western in a series of 6 directed by Harry L. Fraser. The series marked the genre specialist’s directorial debut but is so obscure that Fraser neglected to mention that fact in his published memoirs, They Went Thataway. Fraser remade the film as Wildcat Saunders in 1935, starring Jack Perrin. The slightly built but athletic Gordon Clifford never reached western stardom but continued to play minor roles, usually villainous, through the mid 1930s.
