The aftermath of the bloody civil war in Sri Lanka, which lasted for more than 25 years, is the backdrop to acclaimed Sri Lankan director Prasanna Vithanage’s sensitive, thought-provoking drama. Sarathsiri (Shyam Fernando) is a lonely 45-year-old Sinhalese man who lives in a remote town surrounded by tea plantations. On the ground floor of his house is his pawnshop, where he meets Selvi (Anjali Patil), a 24-year-old woman who has come to pawn her final few valuables. Sarathsiri is fascinated with her and discovers that she is Tamil and comes from the war-stricken area of Kilinochchi. Fearing for their daughter’s life, Selvi’s parents had sent her to live away from the violence. As time passes, Sarathsiri’s fascination turns to love and he proposes to her.
