Ram Gopal Varma Criticize Indian directors for considering the audience ‘dumb’
Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma criticized Indian directors for treating their audiences as if they were not smart. He pointed out that when top Hollywood talents collaborate, they create masterpieces like “Oppenheimer”. In contrast, when leading Indian filmmakers work together, they end up making films like Thugs of Hindostan.
In an interview with Galatta Plus, Ram Gopal Varma talked about how filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood continue to make impactful movies even in their old age. He praised their choice of compelling subjects and top-quality performances. Varma highlighted that their personal attitudes and experiences are clearly visible in their films.
Comparing Indian filmmakers to their Hollywood counterparts, Varma remarked, “We don’t create films of that caliber here. We underestimate our audience’s intelligence.
“Thugs of Hindostan”, released in 2018, featured major Bollywood stars like Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan and was directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya. Despite the star power, the film was a flop at the box office and received negative reviews from critics.
However, Ram Gopal Varma praised Aamir Khan for his ability to take on diverse roles, highlighting that Khan can do both “Ghajini” and “Taare Zameen Par” at the same time. Varma also complimented Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the director of “Kabir Singh” and “Animal”, for creating unique films that broke new ground.
