Shekhar Suman portrays Nawab Zulfikar in Heeramandi, The pre-partition red-light district of Lahore served as the inspiration for the epic series.
Shekhar Suman‘s performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s Heeramandi is praised by everyone. In the epic drama, the actor portrayed a Nawab from the British Raj, a royal title denoting a sovereign monarch, typically of a South Asian state, akin to the title of a prince in Western culture. Shekhar recently shared his opinions on the “immense contribution” that sex workers make to society in an interview with Radio Nasha.
The interaction between courtesans and Nawabs is shown by Heeramandi. According to Shekhar Suman, courtesans are frequently mistaken for nothing more than prostitutes. “It is society that has made them this way,” he said. It has been said often on the show that no woman chooses to become a prostitute. Women are frequently compelled by circumstance to work as prostitutes. In spite of everything, they have made a huge contribution to society. Jaha se hum aate hai, jis tareeka ki bhookh jo mardo mein hai, uska jo channelise waha hota hai uski wajah se samaj bacha rehta hai.
“Kids were sent there, nawabs would learn from them,” Shekhar Suman continued. “We have a different perception of courtesans despite the fact that Heeramandi made a significant contribution and established an institution. Being a courtesan is not a bad thing. Their important contribution to the independence movement was also demonstrated in Heeramandi. They passed away anonymously.”
Heeramandi is set in the era of when the Indian independence movement was gaining steam in the 1920s and 1930s. Nawab Zoravar and young Nawab Zulfikar are portrayed in the series by Adhyayan Suman, Shekhar’s son. Important parts in the epic programme are portrayed by Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharmin Segal, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, and Farida Jalal. Heeramandi is currently available on Netflix.
