Blitz Bazawule directed The Colour Purple, a American musical period drama film. Marcus Gardley‘s screenplay is based on the same-titled Broadway musical, which is itself based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel of the same name. It is the novel’s second cinematic adaptation, following the 1985 film directed and produced by Steven Spielberg and Quincy Jones. Spielberg and Jones return as producers for the 2023 picture, alongside Broadway producers Scott Sanders and Oprah Winfrey, who also appeared in the 1985 film.
The film stars Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, and Fantasia Barrino, who makes her cinematic debut. Brooks and Barrino reprise their roles from the Broadway musicals. It depicts the narrative of Celie, an African American woman who faces the challenges of living with an abusive husband in the early 1900s American South.
Warner Bros. Pictures released The Colour Purple in the United States on December 25, 2023, following its London debut on November 20, 2023. Despite receiving great reviews from critics, it underperformed at the box office, collecting $67.5 million against a budget of $90-100 million. Danielle Brooks’ performance earned her nominations for the Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress. At the 55th NAACP Image Awards, the film received a record-breaking eleven awards from sixteen nominations, including Outstanding Motion Picture and acting prizes for Barrino, Henson, Domingo, and the whole cast.
